The Story of the Bell
To serve as a constant reminder of the insidious chains of stigma and discrimination that bind people with mental illness, the Association cast a 300 pound bell from the very real chains and shackles that once restrained people in mental institutions. The bell is a dramatic representation of vision and liberty which rings out hope for all people suffering from mental illnesses.
The following is inscribed on the bell:
"cast from shackles which bound them, this bell shall ring out hope for the mentally ill and victory over mental illness"
